Bariatric and weight-related psychology support

Psychological support can play an important role before surgery, after surgery, and during the wider process of making sustainable changes around eating, health behaviours, body image, identity, and emotional wellbeing.

Specialist bariatric experience

Tara has worked with Associate Professor Peter Nogle's specialised bariatric support team, performing pre-operative assessments as well as post-operative care.

In this role, she supported patients with motivational and behavioural difficulties, eating-related concerns including binge eating, body image and identity issues, self-esteem, relational stress, and symptoms of anxiety or depression associated with weight.

This support may be helpful if you are

  • Seeking a pre-operative bariatric assessment
  • Preparing emotionally for surgery
  • Adjusting after surgery
  • Finding behaviour change harder than expected
  • Struggling with binge eating or eating patterns that feel difficult to manage
  • Dealing with body image or identity changes
  • Navigating relationship stress, self-esteem, or mood difficulties connected to weight and health

Pre-operative bariatric assessments

A pre-operative assessment can help clarify readiness for surgery, identify supports that may be helpful, and explore emotional, behavioural, and practical factors that may affect outcomes.

Tara offers assessments with a calm, respectful, and non-judgemental approach.

Post-operative adjustment and ongoing support

The period after surgery can involve more than physical recovery. It can also bring shifts in identity, relationships, expectations, routines, mood, and self-image.

Support may help with:

  • Adapting to change
  • Managing stress and setbacks
  • Sustaining helpful habits
  • Coping with emotional eating urges
  • Making sense of body image or identity changes
  • Rebuilding confidence and self-trust

A thoughtful approach to weight-related concerns

Weight-related struggles are rarely just about food or willpower. They often intersect with stress, self-criticism, stigma, self-esteem, health, relationships, and years of frustration.

Psychological support can help create a more compassionate and practical path forward.

For surgeons, GPs, and healthcare referrers

Referrals are welcome for bariatric pre-operative assessment and ongoing post-operative or weight-related psychological support.

Tara's experience in specialist bariatric care supports a referral pathway that is professional, clinically informed, and responsive to the emotional and behavioural aspects of care.
